ラッセル・ネイピアは西オーストラリアのパースで生まれました。元々は弁護士であったネイピアは、1936年にはすでに舞台で俳優として活動を始め、1947年から1974年まで映画とテレビの両方でコメディとドラマの役を演じました。特に、1949年にはH.G.ウェルズの『タイム・マシン』のBBCのライブテレビプロダクションに出演し、このプロダクションの静止写真は存在しますが、実際の映像は残っていません。
