ジェームズ・アーサー・ボールドウィンは、アフリカ系アメリカ人の小説家、エッセイスト、劇作家、詩人、社会批評家でした。彼のエッセイは『ネイティブ・サンのメモ』にまとめられ、西洋社会における人種、性的、階級の違いの明白でありながら語られない複雑さを探求しており、特に20世紀中頃のアメリカにおけるそれらの避けられないが名付けられない緊張を描いています。
