ジャニス・リン・ジョプリンは、1960年代の女性ブルースボーカリストとして最高峰とされるアメリカの歌手であり、彼女の生々しく力強く自由な歌唱スタイルと、波乱に満ちた感情的なライフスタイルが相まって、彼女は生前に最も大きな女性スターの一人となりました。彼女は1970年に薬物過剰摂取で27歳で亡くなり、3枚のアルバムをリリースしました。彼女の死からわずか3ヶ月後にリリースされた4枚目のアルバム『パール』は、チャートで1位を獲得しました。
