オフ・ブロードウェイやラジオ番組で頭角をあらわし、TV「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」で一躍、人気コメディアンになる。盟友ダン・エイクロイドと組んだ「ブルース・ブラザース」で大ヒットを飛ばすが、1982年、薬物の過剰摂取により33歳の若さで死去。
