米コーコラン・スクール・オブ・アーツやペンシルベニア美術アカデミー、アメリカン・フィルム・インスティテュート（AFI）で絵画から映像制作にいたるまで広く学び、5年かけて完成させた映画「イレイザーヘッド」（1977）で鮮烈な監督デビューを果たす。続く「エレファント・マン」（80）がアカデミー作品賞にノミネートされ、自身も監督賞、脚色賞（クリストファー・デボア＆エリック・バーグレンと共同）の候補に挙がった。フランク・ハーバートの大長編SF小説を映画化した「砂の惑星」（84）を経て、「ブルーベルベット」（86）で再びアカデミー監督賞にノミネート。90年の「ワイルド・アット・ハート」はカンヌ国際映画祭...
