アメリカのテレビ史上最も長寿番組の一つである『ガンスモーク』（1955年）のスター。ノルウェー系の家系に生まれ、ミネアポリス、ミネソタ州でロルフとルース・デューズラー・アーネスのもとに生まれた。父は医療用品の旅行販売員で、母は後に新聞のコラムニストとなった。ジェームズはミネアポリスのウエスト高校に通い、学校の劇に出演したが、演技には興味がなく、海に出ることを夢見ていた。高校卒業後、ベロイト大学に1学期通った後、1943年に徴兵通知を受けた。彼は軍に入隊し、ジョージア州のウィーラーキャンプで訓練を受けた後、北アフリカに派遣された。カサブランカに上陸した後、アーネスはアンズィオの侵攻に間に合うよう...
