ジョン・シムは、ランカシャー州ネルソンで育ちました。彼はネルソンのエッジ・エンド高校に通い、その後16歳でブラックプール・ドラマ・カレッジ、19歳でロンドンのドラマ・センターに進学しました。彼は妻で女優のケイト・マゴワンと子供たち、ライアン（2001年8月13日生まれ）とモリー（2007年2月生まれ）と共に暮らしています。シムは、映画デビュー作「ボストン・キックアウト」（1996年）でバレンシア映画祭の最優秀男優賞を受賞しました。
