イタリア系で画家の両親は２歳の時離婚。その後、母親に育てられ１０歳の時から幾度か中断しているものの演技学校に通学。１６歳でステラ・アドラーの下で演技を学ぶ。またアクターズ・スタジオにも通うようになり、やがてオフ・ブロードウェイなどで舞台を経験。映画はニューヨーク派のブライアン・デ・パルマに見出され「ロバート・デ・ニーロの ブルーマンハッタン／ＢＬＵＥ ＭＡＮＨＡＴＴＡＮ II・黄昏のニューヨーク」で主演。以降数本をデ・パルマとコンビを組む。無軌道な若者を演じた「ミーン・ストリート」で注目をされ、コッポラの「ゴッドファーザーＰＡＲＴII」で若き日のコルレオーネ役を演じアカデミー助演男優賞を受賞。...
