経歴・プロフィール
主にアメリカ映画で活躍したイギリスの主演男優で、ゴールデンエイジの偉大なスターの一人。イーリングで成功した絹商人の息子として育ち、サセックスの寄宿学校に通い、そこで初めてアマチュア劇を発見した。ケンブリッジに進学しエンジニアになるつもりだったが、父の死によって必要な経済的支援を失った。ロンドン・スコティッシュ・リージョナルに参加し、第一次世界大戦の勃発時にはフランスに派遣された。メッシーヌの戦いで重傷を負い、ガス攻撃を受け、フランスに出発してからわずか2ヶ月で兵役を免除された。回復後、領事サービスに入ろうとしたが、偶然の出会いでロンドンの舞台で小さな役を得た。彼は他の計画を捨て、演劇に集中し、...
