セント・メアリルボーン・セントラル・スクールで教育を受けました。 1954年にオールダム・レパートリー・シアターでプロの俳優としてのキャリアを始めました。 RADAに通いました。 ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーで演じました。 ナショナル・シアターで演じました。 ロイヤル・コート・シアターで演じました。 1975年のブロードウェイ・トニー賞で「シャーロック・ホームズ」により最優秀助演男優賞にノミネートされました。
