バーナベは1905年4月3日にロンドンのセント・ジャイルズでティナ（旧姓ベンディ）とルイ・ヴィンセント・バーナベの間に生まれました。彼はアビス・ランドンと結婚しましたが、1976年に彼女は亡くなりました。バーナベはロイヤル・アカデミー・オブ・ドラマティック・アートで舞台の訓練を受け、テオドール・コミサルジェフスキーのもとでミムを学びました。彼は1942年から1946年までイギリス軍に従軍
