米カリフォルニア州サンタモニカ出身。父は演出家のレオ・ペン、母は女優のアイリーン・ライアン、兄マイケルは音楽家、弟クリスも俳優という芸能一家で育つ。1981年「タップス」で映画デビューし、「初体験 リッジモント・ハイ」（82）や「俺たちは天使じゃない」（89）に主演。91年には「インディアン・ランナー」で監督・脚本家デビューし、「クロッシング・ガード」（95）などでメガホンをとる。数多くの名匠監督に愛され、「デッドマン・ウォーキング」（95）でベルリン国際映画祭の銀熊賞、「シーズ・ソー・ラヴリー」（97）でカンヌ国際映画祭の男優賞、「キャスティング・ディレクター」（98）と「21グラム」（03...
