舞台俳優を経て、「哀しみの街かど」（71）主演で映画デビュー。フランシス・フォード・コッポラ監督の「ゴッド・ファーザー」（72）のマイケル役に抜てきされ、見事な演技をみせる。以降「ゴッドファーザーPARTII」（74）をはじめ、シドニー・ルメット監督の「セルピコ」（73）、「狼たちの午後」（75）やブライアン・デ・パルマ監督の「スカーフェイス」（83）、「カリートの道」（93）などに出演。「セント・オブ・ウーマン 夢の香り」（92）で8度目のノミネートでアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞した。
