メキシコを代表するフィルムメーカー。子どもの頃からホラー映画のファンで、「エクソシスト」などで特殊メイクを手がけたディック・スミスに師事。長編映画監督デビュー作「クロノス」（93）で、カンヌ国際映画祭の批評家週間グランプリに選ばれるなど一躍注目を集め、続く「ミミック」（97）でハリウッドに進出。スペインの巨匠ペドロ・アルモドバルに招かれ「デビルズ・バックボーン」（01）を監督した後、「ブレイド2」（02）以降はハリウッドを拠点にする。愛読するコミック「ヘルボーイ」を04年に映画化して大ヒットさせ、続編「ゴールデン・アーミー」（08）も監督。「パンズ・ラビリンス」（06）でアカデミー脚本賞に初ノ...
