米フロリダ州オーランド生まれ、ニューヨーク・サウスブロンクス地区育ち。幼い頃から俳優に憧れる一方で、様々なマーシャル・アーツも習得。ニューヨーク州立大学で演劇を専攻し、85年の「ワイルドキャッツ」で映画デビューを果たす。マイケル・ジャクソン「バッド」（87）のPVに出演し、同作を見たスパイク・リーに見いだされ、「モ'・ベター・ブルース」（90）に出演。続く「ジャングル・フィーバー」（91）で主演を務め、広く知られるようになる。同時期に、「ニュー・ジャック・シティ」（91）や「ウォーターダンス」「パッセンジャー57」（92）で活躍し、「ワン・ナイト・スタンド」（97）ではベネチア国際映画祭のボル...
