子どもの頃から、8ミリで映画を作る。初の長編映画「バッド・テイスト」（87）が一部で話題になって以降、数本のスプラッター系ホラーコメディを発表する。少女たちの心の機微を描いた「乙女の祈り」（94）で、ベネチア国際映画祭の銀獅子賞を受賞し、フラン・ウォルシュとともにアカデミー脚本賞にノミネートされる。J・R・R・トールキンの世界的ベストセラー小説「指輪物語」を映画化した「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」3部作（01～03）が世界中で大ヒット。完結編「王の帰還」では、アカデミー作品賞、監督賞、脚色賞含め11部門を制覇し、「ベン・ハー」「タイタニック」に並ぶ史上最多受賞の快挙を成し遂げた。続いて念願だった...
