マーヴィン・ペンツ・ゲイ・ジュニアは1939年4月2日に生まれ、家庭労働者アルバータ・ゲイとペンテコステ派の牧師マーヴィン・ゲイ・シニアの二番目の子供でした。幼い頃から、ゲイは歌うことに情熱を持ち、この職業が彼の非常に困難な青春時代を乗り越える助けになったと信じていました。ゲイの姉は、ゲイ・シニアがマーヴィンを頻繁に殴っていたと述べています。17歳でゲイは高校を中退し、アメリカ空軍に入隊しました。彼がしなければならなかった控えめな労働に不満を抱いたゲイは、精神的な病気を装いました。その結果、彼は「一般的な除隊」を認められました。ゲイはワシントンD.C.地域に戻り、友人とともに「ザ・マルキーズ」...
